The process, which is for producing a compound represented by the formula [(FSO 2 -) a (Z-) 3-a C-] n R(-COY) b-n , comprises reacting a compound represented by the formula (FSO 2 -) a (Z-) 3-a C(-COX) with a compound represented by the formula R(-COY) b by photocoupling reaction when X and Y each is fluorine or by electrolytic coupling reaction when X and Y each independently is hydroxy or a group represented by -OM. In the formulae, X and Y each is fluorine, hydroxy, or a group represented by -OM; Z is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, or a monovalent organic group; R is an organic group having a valence of b; M is an alkali metal atom, a is an integer of 1-3; and b and n each independently is an integer of 1-4, provided that b=n.

A specific diene compound (1) having high-purity is obtained, without using any special reagent or complicated technique, from a mixture of the diene compound (1) and a compound (2) which is difficult to separate by distillation and has the same molecular weight and molecular formula as the compound (1). The method comprises treating a mixture comprising CR1R2=CR3CFR4CR5R6OCR7=CR8R9 (1) and CFR1R2CR3=CR4CR5R6OCR7=CR8R9 (2) to cause the compound (2) to undergo the Claisen rearrangement and then separating the diene compound (1) from the product of the Claisen rearrangement. Alternatively, it comprises conducting the Claisen rearrangement, converting the product of the Claisen rearrangement into a derivative, and then separating the diene compound (1) from the derivative. A method for producing a fluorine-containing alkyl ether is disclosed wherein a sufficient reaction rate can be attained even under mild conditions. This method enables to efficiently perform post-processes such as distillation following the reaction. After introducing a polar non-protic solvent, a fluorine-containing ether, a catalyst, a fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol and a fluorinated olefin into a reaction vessel, the fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol and the fluorinated olefin are reacted with each other so as to produce a fluorine-containing alkyl ether. In this method for producing a fluorine-containing alkyl ether, the mass ratio between the polar non-protic solvent and the fluorine-containing ether introduced in the reaction vessel (polar non-protic solvent/fluorine-containing ether) is from 5/95 to 80/20.

A method for producing a fluorine-containing alkyl ether wherein a fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol and a fluorinated olefin are reacted in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst is characterized in that the fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol and the fluorinated olefin are continuously supplied into a reaction chamber, a reaction product including the fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol is continuously drawn out from the reaction chamber, and the reaction is conducted while keeping the concentration of the fluorine-containing alkyl alcohol in the reaction chamber at 7 mass% or less relative to the total organic component existent in the reaction chamber. With this method, a high-purity fluorine-containing alkyl ether can be produced at high reaction rate on an industrial scale.

Provided are novel perfluoropolyether derivatives useful as lubricating oil or coating material which little cause decomposition and are therefore free from the problem of degradation in service. The perfluoropolyether derivatives are represented by the general formula (1): (1) wherein m is an integer of 3 to 200; p, q, r, and s are each independently an integer of 0 to 100; when p, q, r, and s are each independently an integer of 1 or above, the arrangement of -(CH2CH2O)- and -(CH2CH(OH)CH2O)- units is not particularly limited; and when one of r and p is an integer of 2 or above and the other is an integer of 1 or above or when one of q and s is an integer of 2 or above and the other is an integer of 1 or above, these units may be arranged in block or at random.
