The central driving mechanism may have a plurality of cams, rotating with a main shaft, to control the translations of cutting, forming and inserting members.

The present invention concerns solutions for disposing the wire leads of a wire coil along trajectories that have predetermined positional references relative to the dynamo-electric machine component. A manipulator is provided which encaptures the wire extending from a wire source. The manupulator comprises a hollow longitudinal member with a longitudinal opening and an adjoining axial opening at the end of the hollow member. The manipulator also comprises a rotatable sheath surrounding the hollow member. The sheath has a longitudainal opening and an adjoining axial opening at the end of the sheath. The longitudinal openings of hollow member an sheath are aligned so that the wire can be inserted into the manipulator. The sheath has a further opening adjoining the longitudinal opening of the sheath and extending to a lower part of the sheath at the end of the sheath. The longitudinal opening of the hollow member and the further opening of the sheath are aligned to capture the inserted wire.

A winder and system for winding wire onto core supports of dynamo-electric cores with translational, rotational and radial motions with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the dynamo-electric core is provided. The radial motion may preferably be provided by an independent assembly. In one embodiment of the invention, the radial motion may be provided by rotating a cam disk which is movably connected to, and causes radial motion of, a pair of rollers. The pair of rollers are mounted on support arms which are connected to a needle for dispensing the wire such that movement of the pair causes similar movement of the needle. In another embodiment of the invention, an inclined way is coupled to a slide portion of the needle. When the inclined way is moved parallel to the axis, it causes a radial motion of the slide portion.

Pole structures (e.g., of ferro-magnetic material) (40) are inserted in circumferentially spaced pole receptacles in the inner structure. Coils of wire (50) are wound around the pole structures from outside the inner structure. A hollow annular outer structure (30) (e.g., of ferro-magnetic material) is then disposed concentrically around the outside of the subassembly that includes the inner structure, the pole structures, and the coils. The apparatus includes a wire holding assembly mounted for selective rotational movement with respect to the winding machine. The assembly includes a gripping portion for releasably gripping the wire extending between a terminal of the dynamo-electric core and a winding apparatus. The wire assembly may be selectively rotated to angularly align the gripping portion with respect to the wire.

The present invention concerns forming wire coils by simultaneously winding a plurality of wires onto a dynamo-electric machine component. In order to maximize the amount of wire that can be placed in the spacings of the dynamo-electric machine component, the turns of the wire coil must be regularly disposed without twisting the plurality of wires onto each other. Current winding apparatus may allow certain portions of the wire turns to unevenly accumulate and locally bulge outward from the collection of wire coils. Such bulges, especially in consideration of the limited spacings available on an dynamo-electric machine component, may interfere with or access to the spacings by a wire dispensing member during the winding process. The present invention proposes to perform multiple-wire winding processes that avoid wire twisting and improper disposition of the wires. Further, the present invention proposes to improve the ability of the wire dispensing member to traverse the spacings on the component. As a consequence, the winding processes performed with the present invention are less likely to be hindered by interference and are capable of obtaining more wire fill within the component spacings and higher winding speeds.

The present invention is concerned with the driving mechanism of winding needles which dispense wire to form the wire coils of a dynamo-electric machine component. Generally, such wire winding is achieved by providing translational, rotational, and radial motions to the winding needle relative to a reference structure of the component. The present invention provides wire winding solutions for causing the winding needles to accomplish predetermined motions with respect to the component so that wire is predictably positioned on the component to form the wire coils. In particular, the present invention provides a driving mechanism with coaxial hollow shafts that impart the necessary motions to the winding needle. The inner shaft is able to mirror the rotation of the outer shaft to provide rotational motion to the winding needle. The outer shaft is able to impart both translational and rotational motion via coaxially disposed rotatable sleeves driven by motors.

Methods and apparatus for terminating dynamoelectric machine component wire coil leads in situ in automated wire coil winding machines are provided. A shape-forming wire-termination fixture is disposed about the front face of the dynamoelectric machine component. After the wire coils have been wound, a movable wire gripper is used to grasp and manipulate the starting and ending wire leads of the wound coils one at a time. The wire leads are terminated by deforming them around the wire-termination fixture to form freestanding geometrical patterns in them. Machine component-holding pick and place devices may be used to remove components with terminated wire leads from the winding machine for further processing.

The coil insertion devices may have a ram that has a longitudinal axis and may be configured to insert a portion of a stretch of pre-wound coil into a bore of the machine component. The coil insertion devices may have pushing members that move in a direction having a circumferential component with respect to the axis. The pushing members may insert portions of stretches of pre-wound coils into machine component slots that are difficult to access from the axial region of the bore.
