The present invention is directed towards a hot melt wetness indicator composition based on an ethylene-alkylacrylate-acrylic acid terpolymer. The wetness indicator composition comprises the terpolymer, a tackifying resin, a compatible surfactant having a HLB value less than 20 and a pH indicator or a dye that is capable of changing color when insulted with urine, as the primary ingredients. One embodiment of the present invention is to provide a wetness indicator that has excellent heat and environmental stability, improved fastness, vivid color change, easy manufacturing, and easy application. Another embodiment is directed towards a composition having a delayed response and therefore can withstand multiple insults daily.

The composition includes a flexible polyolefin polymer or a blend of flexible polyolefin polymers, a tackifier resin, a plasticizer, and optionally a wax and a stabilizer. The preferred flexible polyolefin polymer has a melt flow rate greater than 5 g/10 min. and a density between 0.86 to 0.90 g/cm3. The hot melt adhesive composition provides a novel combination of desirable properties including good adhesion to a variety of substrates, low viscosity, good heat stability and oil resistance. The adhesive can be applied using common application techniques such as extruding or spraying.

A water sensitive hot melt adhesive composition based on polyalkyleneimine copolymers for use with articles such as paper products, disposable nonwoven products, tapes, labels and packaging materials. By varying the amount of copolymer included in the composition as well as by varying the chain structure and the ratio of soluble versus insoluble repeating units in the copolymer, an adhesive may be formulated to modify the degree of solubility from 100% to 0% soluble in water and/or other performance characteristics. The adhesive composition includes about 10% to about 70%, by weight, of a polyalkyleneimine copolymer or a blend of one or more polyalkyleneimine copolymers; about 0% to about 70%, by weight, of a tackifying resin; about 10% to about 70%, by weight, of a compatible plasticizer; and about 0.1% to about 3% by weight of one or more antioxidant. The adhesive maintains the article in an assembled condition by providing adequate adhesive bond strength during normal use, but dissolves in the presence of water thereby permitting the article to be recycled or otherwise disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
