    摘要: Secondary resonant pickup coils (102) used in loosely coupled inductive power transfer systems, with resonating capacitors (902) have high Q and could support large circulating currents which may destroy components. A current limit or "safety valve" uses an inductor designed to enter saturation at predetermined resonating currents somewhat above normal working levels. Saturation is immediate and passive. The constant-current characteristic of a loosely coupled, controlled pickup means that if the saturable section is shared by coupling flux and by leakage flux, then on saturation the current source is terminated in the saturated inductor, and little detuning from resonance occurs. Alternatively an external saturable inductor (1101, 1102) may be introduced within the resonant circuit (102 and 902), to detune the circuit away from the system frequency. Alternatively DC current may be passed through a winding to increase saturation of a saturable part of a core. As a result, a fail-safe pickup offering a voltage-limited constant-current output is provided.

    摘要: The present invention provides a system for controlling one or more operating unites in an inductive power transfer (IPT) system. Each operating unit includes a pick-up coil that takes power from a primary conductor or track over an air gap. The operating unit is controlled by frequency modulating the primary conductor power supply to send a control instruction which is decoded by the operating unit. The instruction is decoded by generating a signal using a local oscillator in the operating unit and using the signal to detect changes in the frequency of the current in the primary conductor. Such a system can be used, for example, to control inductively powered road-studs that include a light source for controlling traffic on a roadway. A narrow band modulated data transmission system and method for controlling an operating unit are also provided.

    摘要: A contactless inductive power distribution system operating at 10 KHz has a self tuning resonant power supply connected to a resonant primary conductive path 10110, 10111 comprising a pair of parallel litz wire conductors 10110, 10111 each encapsulated within an insulated sheath and supported on a structural monorail beam 10101 on which a plurality of electric vehicles can run. Each vehicle has an electric motor (not shown) capable of deriving power from a resonant pick-up coil 10115 wound on a ferrite core 10102 mounted on the vehicle in close proximity to the primary conductors 10110, 10111. Each vehicle also has switching means 10116 capable of preventing a lightly loaded vehicle from presenting a reduced load to the resonant primary. As shown, this comprises an isolating coil 10116 having a switch (not shown) to switch the coil between an open circuit and a short circuit, so that when the switch is switched from one state to another state the power coupled between the primary conductive path 10110, 10111 and the pick-up coil 10115 is changed.
