摘要: Un commutateur optique comprend un interféromètre (2) à boucle Sagnac à fibres optiques, muni d'un port d'entrée (10) et d'un port de sortie (12). Une source de signaux optiques (26) sur 1,53 mum est couplée au port d'entrée (10) et une source de signaux optiques de contrôle (18, 20) sur des longueurs d'onde de 1,30mum et de 1,31mum est couplée à l'interféromètre (2) par un coupleur dichroïque (8). Le coupleur (8) partage le signal optique d'entrée sur 1,53mumn en deux parties qui se contrepropagent autour de la boucle (6), et couple le signal de contrôle pour se propager dans une seule direction autour de la boucle (6). Le déphasage entre les parties du signal au port de sortie (12) dépend de l'intensité de signal optique de contrôle lorsqu'elles se recombinent au niveau du coupleur (8). Les signaux optiques de contrôle sont formés par l'association d'au moins deux flux d'impulsions optiques, les impulsions des flux d'impulsions optiques distincts n'étant pas interférométriques, ce qui permet de créer une porte ET logique.

摘要: An all-optical fibre Sagnac antiresonant interferometer (2) is formed from an optical fibre having a non-linear refractive index. The coupler (8) is a dichroic coupler coupling equal portions of a cw optical signal at 1.53 νm from laser (16) to ports (14 and 16) and all of a pulsed optical signal from laser (20) to port (14). The intensity of the pulsed optical signal is sufficient to provide a relative phase shift in the counter propagating 1.53 νm signals. The loop (6) is longer than the inverse of the absolute difference in group delays of the cw and pulsed optical so causing a square optical pulse at 1.53 νm to be switched to port (12) of the coupler.

La boucle (6) offre une non-linéarité telle que le signal de données fournit un décalage de phase relatif des portions de capteur cv de contre-propagation provoquant le basculement d'une portion du signal à 1,53mum vers l'orifice (12). Cette sortie du signal basculé à 1,53mum permet d'obtenir une réduction du signal de données sans amoindrir son intensité.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for generating an optical bit slot window in which N bit slots having the same logical state are generated. A switching device is used which is coupled to an optical pulse source which generates optical pulses in successive bit slots, each optical pulse representing a logical state. Switching signals are then applied to a switching input of the switching device so as to selectively switch a connection between the input and an output. Consequently the logical state of the output is controlled to generate the required N bit slot window.

摘要: The present invention relates to apparatus for determining the sum of first and second optical binary words. The apparatus uses a first optical logic gate (35) and a second optical logic gate (17) to generate respective first and second combination words which represent a logical combination of the binary words applied to the respective logic gates (17, 35). The first and second combination words are then offset by one bit slot with respect to each other by an offsetting means (22, 32) to generate first and second offset combination words. These offset combination words are repeatedly fed back to the first and second logic gates. The binary sum of the original two words is given by the first combination word when each bit slot of the second combination word has the same logical state.

摘要: A method of communication based on quantum cryptography is modified to include an initial step of outputting from, e.g., a transmitter (T), a single-photon signal, which may be unmodulated. A receiver (R1-R3) then randomly selects one of a plurality of encryption alphabets corresponding to different, non-commuting quantum mechanical operators. The receiver modulates the single-photon signal with the selected operator and returns the signal to the transmitter. The transmitter in turn randomly selects a quantum mechanical operator and uses that operator in detecting the returned signal modulated by the receiver. Alternatively, the transmitter may randomly select one of a plurality of encryption alphabets and use that encryption alphabet in modulating the signal. The signal is then further modulated at the receiver using a predetermined encryption alphabet. When the signal is received back at the transmitter, it is detected using the same quantum mechanical operator as was initially used to modulate it. Comparison is made of the states of the single-photon signals as transmitted and received to detect the presence of any eavesdropper.

摘要: An optical switch comprises an optical fibre Sagnac loop interferometer (2) having an input port (10) and an output port (12). A source of optical signals (26) at 1.53 mu m is coupled to the input port (10) and a source of control optical signals (18, 20) of wavelengths 1.30 mu m and 1.31 mu m are coupled to the interferometer (2) by a dichroic coupler (8). The coupler (8) splits the 1.53 mu mn input optical signal into two signal portions which counterpropagate round the loop (6) and couples the control signal to propagate in one direction only round the loop (6). The phase difference between the signal portions at the output port (12) is dependent on the intensity of the control optical signal when they recombine at the coupler (8). The optical control signals are formed by combining at least two optical pulse streams, the pulses of distinct optical pulse streams being non-interferometric, to provide a logical AND gate.

摘要: The invention relates to the control of soliton-soliton interaction through the application of a positive phase shift. For each soliton width there is a critical phase modulation level above which soliton-soliton interaction can be virtually eliminated. This enables the spacing between adjacent solitons to be reduced, increasing the system bandwidth even for long transmission distances. The invention finds application in submarine and other long haul systems.
