A mixing device for compounding polymers by elongational deformation is described. The device has a casing (1) with an inlet (2) and an outlet (3). The casing has inner walls (4) defining an enclosure (5) which communicates with the inlet and the outlet. A core (6) is arranged in the enclosure and defines a mixing space (7) between the core (6) and the enclosure wall (4). The mixing space (7) is divided into several slits (9) and chambers (10) by protrusions (8). The device is characterised in that the enclosure (5) and the core (6) are concentrically arranged around a common axis (A) and are conically tapered towards the outlet (3), and that the protrusions (8) are circumferentially arranged on at least one of the core (6) and the enclosure wall (4) with a slit gap in the range from about 0.5 mm to about 10 mm and a width of the slit gap in the range of 0 to about 5 mm. Preferably, the enclosure wall (4) and the core (6) are adjustable relative to each other for adjustment of the slit gap. The mixing device is preferably incorporated in a compounding equipment comprising a melting extruder (17), the mixing device, a homogenizing extruder (18) and a pelletizer (19).

Catalyst A, deposited on an inorganic support, comprises chromium in a predominantly oxidation state of 2. Catalyst B comprises a bis-cyclopentadienyl chromium compound reacted with an inorganic support. The produced polyethylene composition comprises 40-80 % by weight of a first polyethylene and 60-20 % by weight of a second polyethylene. Said first polyethylene is characterized by having a melt index MI21 15. Said second polyethylene is characterized by MI2 > 300 and it contains alkyl branches in a number of up to 20 % of the corresponding number of side branches in said first polyethylene.

The invention provides a method of studying the properties of a polymer. A rheometer having a pump (2) and a die(3) is arranged such that polymer is pumped through the die. Transducers (4) measure pressures within the rheometer. The polymer is supplied to the rheometer with the pump (2) at one speed and value(s) indicative of the shear stress in the fluid within the die are obtained from the transducers (4). This provides a set of data. The data is then directly compared, using multivariate analysis with previously obtained data corresponding to polymer(s) with known rheological properties. The results of this comparison may then be used to control the manufacturing process.
