A process for the polymerization of ethylene and optionally also α-olefins to ethylene homopolymers or copolymers having a broad molecular weight distribution, comprising polymerization of 100-80 wt.% of ethylene and 0-20 wt.% of comonomer in the presence of two independent, simultaneously present catatlysts A and B. Catalyst A, deposited on an inorganic support, comprises chromium in a predominantly oxidation state of 2. Catalyst B comprises a bis-cyclopentadienyl chromium compound reacted with an inorganic support. The produced polyethylene composition comprises 40-80 % by weight of a first polyethylene and 60-20 % by weight of a second polyethylene. Said first polyethylene is characterized by having a melt index MI21 15. Said second polyethylene is characterized by MI2 > 300 and it contains alkyl branches in a number of up to 20 % of the corresponding number of side branches in said first polyethylene.

The catalyst system is prepared by a method comprising the steps of calcining the support, joining onto the surface of the support a chronium-organic compound, subjecting the obtained catalyst precursor to oxidising conditions to obtain the chromium in an oxidised state, reducing the oxidised chromium to obtain a main part thereof in a bivalent oxidation state, and contacting the reduced catalyst with the metallocene compound.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a multimodal Α-olefin polymer comprising polymerising in a polymerisation stage at least one Α-olefin in the presence of a multisite catalyst and an adjuvant so as to produce a polymer having a relatively lower molecular weight component and a relatively higher molecular weight component, said adjuvant being selected from the group consisting of phosphines, phosphites, acetylenes, dienes, thiophenes and aluminium alkyls and said adjuvant being capable of altering the ratio of the fraction of higher molecular weight component to the fraction of the lower molecular weight component by at least 10%.
