A radiation source (24) for inhibiting restenosis including a radiation delivery tube (20) having a radioactive distal region (24), the tube (20) being adapted to slide over a core wire (28) within a radiation delivery catheter (42). The core wire (28) is preferably in a slidable relation with the radiation delivery catheter (42). By withdrawing the core wire (28) to a proximal position, the flexibility of a distal region of the radiation delivery catheter (42) may be increased, thereby allowing the radiation delivery catheter (42) to navigate more tortuous paths and reach more distal sites. Before the radiation delivery tube (20) is advanced into the catheter distal region, the core wire (28) is preferably slid distally to a distal position. With the core wire (28) in the distal position, the core wire (28) may provide a structure that can be used to rapidly advance the radiation source (24) to the lesion site. The core wire (28) may also help constrain lateral movement of the radiation delivery tube (20) and help center the radiation delivery tube (20) within the vessel to provide a more even radiation exposure to the vessel walls.

Another device (121) includes a radioactive elastic sleeve (140) mounted on a shaft (138). The device (121) can be used to inhibit restenosis following angioplasty in coronary arteries. In use, the device (121) can be advanced distally over the balloon (44) portion of a positioned and deflated angioplasty balloon catheter (20), whereupon the balloon (44) is inflated, pressing the radiation device into close contact with the vessel walls. After a desired exposure period, the balloon (44) is deflated, and the device (21), biased to contract, contracts with the balloon (44), allowing for ease of withdrawal from the patient.

This invention is an intravascular radiation delivery system (10) including a catheter (11), a radiation source (14), disposed in an open-ended lumen (12) in the catheter (11), and a closed-ended sheath (13) surrounding the radiation source (14), so as to prevent blood and other fluids from coming into contact with the radiation source (14). Preferably, the open-ended lumen (12) is centered in the balloon (15) for uniform radiation delivery. The catheter (11) may include a blood perfusion lumen under the balloon (15) or around the balloon (15). The open-ended lumen (12) in the catheter (11) may have a reduced diameter adjacent the distal end of the catheter (11) to prevent the radiation source (14) from exiting the lumen. Methods of using the radiation delivery system (10) are also disclosed, such as an alternative method of delivering radiation to a treatment site inside the vasculature of a patient using a gas-filled balloon catheter and a radiation source disposed in the balloon catheter. The treatment site is exposed to radiation, preferably beta radiation, through the gas-filled balloon.
