A diffusion code generating method for a code division multiplex communication by a spread spectrum system is provided. A receiving apparatus according to the above method receives the signal which was multiplexed by using a plurality of sets of diffusion codes and comprises: a generator to generate a sync code and a plurality of sets of diffusion codes other than the sync code; a correlator to obtain a correlation between a reception signal and the sync code generated from the generator; and a receiver to receive the reception signal on the basis of the plurality of sets of diffusion codes generated from the generator. The generator generates the sync code in a manner such that the cross-correlation values are set to very small values at positions near a code sync point or are enough smaller than the autocorrelation peak of the sync code or are set to very small values at both of or either one of the positions before and after the code sync point.

The SAW element includes a piezoelectric substrate (11), two generation electrodes (12,13) provided on the piezoelectric substrate, for generating a first surface acoustic wave and a second surface acoustic wave, respectively, and an output electrode (14) provided on the piezoelectric substrate, for propagating the first and second surface acoustic waves in mutually opposite directions to extract a convolution signal of the first and second surface acoustic waves. The matching circuit effects impedance matching between the element and an external circuit. In the apparatus at least a part of the matching circuit is formed on the piezoelectric substrate.

Correlation calculation between a received spread spectrum signal and the local reference code is performed. Upon reception of the correlation calculation result, a peak detector detects a correlation peak signal. The rate of a code generation clock is adjusted in accordance with the phase difference between the timing signal and the correlation peak signal to perform de-spread processing of the received signal.

The surface acoustic wave element comprises a piezoelectric substrate, a first excitation electrode, formed on the piezoelectric substrate, for generating a first surface acoustic wave which propagates in a predetermined direction in accordance with the first signal, a second excitation electrode, formed on the piezoelectric substrate, for generating a second surface acoustic wave which propagates in a direction opposite to the predetermined direction in accordance with the second signal, and an acousto-electric converter, formed between the first and second excitation electrodes on the piezoelectric substrate, for outputting a convolution signal of the first and second signals on the basis of the first and second surface acoustic waves, wherein the acousto-electric converter selectively converts a surface acoustic wave having a wave number twice a wave number of the first and second surface acoustic waves into an electrical signal.
