摘要： A segmented presser assembly (100) for laying fibre tows (14) and producing composite plastic articles has a plurality of presser element disks (113, 114, 115). The disks, stacked side-by-side, are independently movable and biased against a work surface (104) such as a mandrel or mold. An elastic band (121) is provided on the rotary outer periphery of each disk. Each band is unconnected to elastic bands on adjacent disks. Some at least of the disks (114, 115) and their respective bands (121) are radially movable during the laydown and compaction of the fibre tows over the changing contour of the workpiece surface. The elastic band has a low friction face, such as, for example, a "Teflon" film, for engaging the fibre tows.

摘要： An improved fibre guidance system for a fibre placement machine where a fibre placement head (25) is moved by a manipulator wrist (15) with respect to a relatively stationary creel assembly (24), and a plurality of fibre redirect roller assemblies (38 a , 38 b ) are used, each having a caster-like mounting base (39), one roller assembly (38 b ) being mounted to the machine member (14) with the creel assembly (24), and one member (38 a ) being mounted to the fibre placement head (25), so that a band of fibres (23) is trained around the first and second redirect rollers under tension and the redirect rollers will swivel about their bases (39) in accordance with spatial orientations of the placement head and in accordance with tension of fibre band, thereby maintaining approximately equal tension at the outer fibres at each side of the fibre band.
