An anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell which has characteristics of high-speed response and broad visual field angle and generates no image persistence. This anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is constituted by an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material narrowly held between a pair of parallel substrates. The anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material injected between the parallel substrates has such a characteristic that when a sine voltage value obtained by changing a reference frequency is applied to the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell, an imaginary part of a complex dielectric constant obtained by carrying out Fourier transform of an output voltage value outputted from the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cell has no maximum value within a range of reference frequency of 100 Hz to 5 kHz. In other words, this characteristic is equivalent to such a characteristic that when a real part and an imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant are plotted by Cole-Cole plot for every frequency, a curve having no maximum value within the range of reference frequency of 100 Hz to 5kHz is obtained.

An antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell in which an antiferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates is improved in contrast. The antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell has a layered structure such that in the case where a voltage outputted on application of a sine-wave voltage as a reference frequency to the liquid crystal cell is transformed by Fourier transform, the transformed output voltage includes laps of components of frequencies which are odd-number times and even-number times the reference frequency, and its optical path length is 100 to 800 nm.

A liquid crystal device used for an electrooptical device, in which parameters of liquid crystal having a laminar structure are regulated to increase stress resistance and provide halftoning. A ferroelectric liquid crystal or an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting a laminar structure is sandwiched between parallel substrates. A plurality of tilt angles can be set for the boundary layer of the substrates in the laminar structure. The laminar structure can be symmetric or asymmetric with respect to the middle plane between the parallel substrates. Under this construction, a liquid crystal device comprises a plurality of layer structures containing at least one of (1) the structure wherein the tilt angle of the substrate boundary surface is 0 to 3 DEG and a c director tilt is 3 to 5 DEG , (2) the structure wherein the substrate boundary layer tilt angle is 4 to 7 DEG and the c director tilt is 0 to 3 DEG and (3) the structure wherein the substrate boundary layer tilt angle is 8 to 20 DEG and the c director tilt is 9 to 90 DEG .

An antiferroelectric liquid crystal panel not exhibiting a blackening phenomenon due to temperature change and comprising a pair of substrates and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal which is interposed between the substrates and to which a chiral agent whose helical axis is generally parallel to the normal of the substrate is added. The chiral agent added may be clockwise or counterclockwise with respect to the helical axis. Alternatively, the two types are added to the antiferroelectric liquid crystal. The Jones's vector of the light emerging from a liquid crystal cell is found, and the angle of shift between the upper and lower chevrons is calculated.
