Disclosed is a composition that includes a photo-curable base composition that contains one or more acrylate-containing compounds; a photoinitiator that activates polymerization of the photo-curable base composition upon exposure to light of a suitable wavelength; and a photo-acid generating compound that liberates an acid group following exposure to the light of the suitable wavelength. Optical fibers that include the cured product of this composition demonstrate enhanced fatigue resistance, extending lifetime in transient, very small bend applications. Optical fiber ribbons that contain these optical fibers are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a composition for coating an optical fiber (10) that comprises a core fiber (12), a cladding (14), a inner primary coating (16), and an outer primary coating (18). Wherein the composition of the present invention contains an oligomer capable of being polymerized, a monomer suitable to control viscosity of the composition, and an adhesion promoter which includes a compound containing a cyclic structure interposed between at least two reactive silanes which are independently an alkoxysilane or a halosilane. Another composition of the present invention includes an oligomer capable of being polymerized, a monomer suitable to control viscosity of the composition, an adhesion promoter which includes a compound containing a reactive silane group, and a carrier. The present invention also relates to optical fibers and methods of making optical fibers using the composition of the present invention.

A method includes applying a coupling agent solution to a major surface of a continuously moving glass ribbon to form a coupling agent coated region of the glass ribbon. The glass ribbon is a flexible glass ribbon having a thickness of at most about 300 μm. The method includes heating the coupling agent coated region of the glass ribbon to form a coupling agent treated region of the glass ribbon and winding the glass ribbon onto a collection roll. A glass ribbon has a thickness of at most about 300 μm and a major surface. At least a portion of the major surface includes a coupling agent treated region. Upon forming a polymeric layer on the coupling agent treated region at least five months after forming the coupling agent treated region, the polymeric layer has a peel force of at least 200 gf/in.
