Glasses are disclosed which are used to produce substrates in flat panel display devices. The glasses exhibit a density less than about 2.45 gm/cm3 and a liquidous viscosity greater than about 200,000 poises, the glass consisting essentially of the following composition, expressed in terms of mol percent on an oxide basis: 65-75 SiO¿2?, 7-13 Al2O3, 5-15 B2O3, 0-3 MgO, 5-15 CaO, 0-5 SrO, and essentially free of BaO. The glasses also exhibit a strain point exceeding 650 °C.

Glassy coatings that isolate metal surfaces from carbon particles, and a method of applying the coatings. The coatings composed of essentially K2O, SiO2, and Al2O3, and has a CTE of at least 80 x 10-7/°C. These glassy coatings, which adhere well to metals, employ a potassium-silicate glass composition in three forms: a pure glass, a glass loaded with inert filler having a CTE higher than the glass itself, and a precursor frit that when 'reactive-cerammed' produces a predominantly leucite crystalline phase and forms the glassy coating in-situ on the metal surface, creating a protective layer between the exposed metal surface and corrosive chemical-processing environments.

The device (20) comprises a substrate (22) and an optical waveguide (24) component affixed to the substrate with a glass frit fusion seal (34) formed and locked within a recessed void in the substrate, the glass frit fusion seal being the fused product of a low melting glass frit. The recessed void in the substrate includes a region for receiving the optical waveguide component (24) and an intersecting region that secures the placement of the glass frit fusion seal (34). The optical waveguide component (24) is affixed to the substrate in order to control temperature varying optical properties of the component.
