摘要:
An apparatus for currency discrimination comprises first and second stationary scanheads, disposed on opposite sides of a bill transport path, for scanning respective first and second opposing surfaces of a bill traveling along the bill transport path and for producing respective output signals. The bill travels along the transport path in the direction of a predetermined dimension of the bill. A memory stores master characteristic patterns corresponding to associated predetermined surfaces of a plurality of denominations of genuine bills. Sampling circuitry samples the output signals associated with the respective first and second opposing surfaces of the scanned bill. A signal processor is programmed to determine which one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponds to the associated predetermined surfaces of the plurality of denominations of genuine bills. The processor then correlates the output signal associated with the one of the first and second opposing surfaces corresponding to the associated predetermined surfaces with the master characteristic patterns to identify the denomination of the scanned bill.

A shredding device uses a plurality of interleaving, counter-rotating discs (16,18) to reduce sheets of material into longitudinal strips. One or more notches (38), formed in the periphery of each disc, cut the longitudinal strips into segments. Deflectors (48,50) disposed in the spaces between each disc clear unwanted material from between the discs. When jammed, the rotation of the discs reverses, and the notches (38) bite into the jammed material to help remove it from between the discs.

A coin sorter having a rotatable disc (13) includes a brake mechanism for stopping rotation of the disc (13) in response to a predetermined number of counted coins. The disc (13) is driven through a gear train (22, 23, 24, 25) by an electric motor (20). The brake mechanism includes an electromagnetic actuating assembly (42) and an armature (40) mounted on the shaft (21) of a motor (20). Upon energization of the actuating assembly (42), the armature (40) is drawn into contact with the actuating assembly (42) to provide a braking pressure which halts rotation of the motor (20) and the disc (13).

A currency evaluation device receives a stack of currency bills and evaluates said bills. It comprises an input receptacle for receiving the stack, an output receptacle, a transport mechanism for transporting said bills, one at a time, and a discriminating unit for evaluating the bills, comprising two detectors positioned along a transport path and disposed on opposite sides thereof, so as to be disposed adjacent to first and second opposing surfaces of the bills and counting and determining the denomination of the bills. It further comprises means for flagging a bill when its denomination is not determined.
