An improved lighting apparatus, suitable for use as part of a lighting fixture, is disclosed, having a plurality of groups of distinct light-emitting devices, e.g., light-emitting diodes, that can be controlled to produce a beam of light having a wide variety of complex luminous flux spectra, including, but not limited, to spectra that closely emulate that of any one of a number of conventional light sources, with or without a conventional chemical dye filter. Each group of light-emitting devices is configured to emit light having a distinct luminous flux spectrum. A controller supplies selected amounts of electrical power to two or more groups of the plurality of groups of light-emitting devices, such that the groups cooperate to produce a composite beam of light having a selected luminous flux spectrum. The spectrum can be controlled to have a normalized mean deviation across the visible spectrum, relative to that of a beam of light to be emulated, of less than about 30 %. This a marked improvement over all known lighting fixtures of the kind including multiple groups of distinct light sources. The groups of light-emitting devices are configured to include independently selected quantities of devices. Further, the groups of light-emitting devices are configured to each have a spectral half-width of less than about 40 nanometers (nm), and to have a peak flux wavelength that is spaced less than about 50 nm from that of an adjacent group.

An incandescent lamp is disclosed, incorporating a special optical coating system that enables the lamp to provide an improved luminous efficacy. In one form, the optical coating system includes a plurality of dielectric layers having prescribed refractive indices and prescribed thicknesses, which are selected such that the optical coating provides a prescribed transmittance/reflectance spectrum having an average reflectance greater than 90% across an infrared wavelength range of 740 to 2000 nm and further having an average transmittance of less than 90% across a visible wavelength range of 400 to 700 nm. In another form, the optical coating system includes two distinct coatings: (1) a first coating including a plurality of dielectric layers having prescribed refractive indices and prescribed thicknesses, which are selected such that the first coating provides a prescribed transmittance/reflectance spectrum, and (2) a second coating including a transparent electrically conductive material configured such that the second coating provides a prescribed transmittance/reflectance spectrum. The invention also is embodied in a lighting fixture incorporating an optical coating as described above, located either on the envelope of the incandescent lamp, itself, or on another substrate of the fixture, separate and apart from the lamp, e.g., a fixed transparent envelope surrounding the incandescent lamp.

Disclosed is a lighting fixture for projecting a beam of light useful in theater, television, and architectural lighting applications. The fixture includes cast substrate comprised of a heat-conductive material, with a concave front side that defines a reflective surface and a convex rear side that defines a plurality of cooling fins exposed to the fixtures's exterior, to provide enhanced convective cooling. This configuration enables the use of special temperature-sensitive reflective coatings that otherwise would be subject to degradation. A receptacle is defined in the cast reflector substrate, for conformably receiving the cast base of a lamp assembly, thereby enabling a precise positioning of the lamp assembly's filaments in a prescribed position relative to the reflective surface without the need for manual adjustment.
