A mixture of C10 to C14 aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g., resulting from a synthesis reaction, is upgraded to lower alkyl benzenes by passing the mixture over an aluminosilicate catalyst together with a catalytic additive, which can be recovered for re-use. At least an equivalent weight of catalytic additive is used and the upgrading is carried out in the vapour phase.

Unsized paper is treated with an aqueous composition having a pH from 7.8 to 8.2 and comprising 10 to 70 parts of a dissolved ionic fire retardant and 0.2 to 1 parts of an emulsified alkylketene dimer. The time of treatment is such that the paper has a dry material loading of fire retardant of 10 to 50% and of water repellant of 0.4 to 1 %. The method is of particular use with handsheet paper.

An improved catalyst for conversion 'of oxygen-containing aliphatics to hydrocarbons in a silica xerogel having a layer of an aluminium compound chemically bonded onto its surface, having a maximum pore diameter of 1.1 nm and having substantially only protons and/or transition metal cations as electrical charge balancing species. The catalyst is very specific for the production of aromatics, if the reaction and calcination temperatures fall into given ranges. Certain catalysts show high selectivity for the production of toluene.
