The central unit delivers the direct supply voltage via a resistor of the bus line for the duration of the signal transmission through the modules so that the voltage signal of the modules can be detected in the central unit on the bus line, on the side of the resistor facing away from the direct supply voltage. The invention is particularly suitable for use for bus systems in motor vehicles, especially for a sensor data bus.

The invention relates to a method for transmitting power and data in a bus system (5) provided for occupant protection devices (1.1), whereby, by means of the bus system (5), digital data is exchanged between a central processing unit (7) and a plurality of control modules (6) of occupant protection devices (1.1) which can be triggered. Said occupant protection devices are especially used in motor vehicles. The control modules are connected to said central processing unit in a communicative manner. According to the inventive method, power is supplied to the control modules (6) via the bus system (5). The energy stores (1.4) provided in peripheral control modules (6) of occupant protection devices (1.1) are discharged when the occupant protection device is triggered. Said energy stores must be recharged again after the triggering action. However, the bus system which is also required for transmitting data is subjected to a heavy load if the recharging process occurs immediately after triggering. The dynamic bus system load can be avoided such that the transmission of data to other control modules can be additionally guaranteed. This is achieved by suppressing the recharging of the energy stores (1.4) of the triggered occupant protection devices (1.1), preferably until a reset instruction is given. The invention relates to a method for operating an occupant safety device and to a control unit provided for carrying out the inventive method. In order to limit the power supplied from the storage element to a triggering means, the supplied electric power is measured after each triggering means has been actuated, and the power supply to the triggering means is interrupted after a determinable power limiting value has been reached. For this, known methods which use the voltage on the storage element as a measure of the supplied power are extremely substandard since they are dependent both on the charged state of the storage element and on the conductor resistance, thus leading to maloperations. The invention provides a simple and precise determination of the power supply in the triggering electric circuit of occupant safety devices in a manner which is independent of conductor resistance. To this end, instead of using the voltage, a value which is proportional to the square of the current flowing through the triggering means is integrated into an integral value and is compared to the power limiting value.
