Television receivers are increasingly making use of digital signal processing. Present-day television receivers use a line-coupled clock system in this case, since this produces an orthogonal pixel array for signal processing on the picture screen. The disadvantage of such a clock grid resides in its problematical generation, in particular when video recorders are used as signal source. According to the invention, video signals are digitized and processed by means of a free-wheeling sytem clock made from a quartz oscillator. In order not to have to use large buffer memories, the vertical deflection is synchronized with the input signal, but the number of lines per field or frame is varied.

A method for obtaining line synchronization information items from a video signal is proposed. To that end, the following improvement measures are proposed: a) an accurate determination of the position of a line synchronization pulse is effected by carrying out a convolution operation between the video signal for the video line and a pattern function. The exact position is then established by analysis of the result function (φSV(k)) of the convolution operation. B) time-domain filtering of the established positions of the line synchronization pulses is carried out, in which a linear or non-linear estimation for the purpose of determining the corrected positions of the line synchronization pulses is carried out in each case. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.

The proposal is for an oscillator containing a chain of delay components (10.1, ..., 10.1) and emitting an output signal, the period T of which substantially corresponds to the total delay of the chain. The oscillator of the invention has a logic stage (11) towhich are applied signals which can be tapped along the chain or generated by additional means. The logic stage affects the input signal of the first delay component (10.1) in the chain. The oscillator of the invention may be used as part of a phase detector.
