A method is disclosed of forming a seal between two or more non-porous substrates by adding an oximosilicon compound to a prepared roomtemperature-vulcanizable silicone sealant composition which is comprised of an alkoxy ended polydiorganosiloxane, a crosslinker having silicon-bonded methoxy or ethoxy, a filler, a titanate catalyst, and by-produced methanol or ethanol that is obtained during the manufacture of the silicone sealant composition. applying the sealant composition to at least two non-porous substrates forming an assembly of an uncured sealant composition bonding them together, subjecting the assembly to conditions which would ordinarily form detrimental bubbles if the oximosilicon compound were not present, and completely curing the composition to form an assembly of at least two non-porous substrates bonded by cured sealant that is essentially free of detrimental bubbles. Such a method is valuable in forming gaskets which are used in the internal combustion engine industry.

A method of reducing the volatility and decreasing the evaporation loss of water repellent compositions containing a solution of an alkylalkoxysilane and a carrier prior to application of the composition to a porous substrate by acidifying the solution in order to cause rapid equilibration of the alkylalkoxysilane and the carrier to a constant steady state condition, adding to the acidified hydrolyzed alkylalkoxysilane solution at least one metal salt catalyst to further increase the hydrolysis rate of the alkylalkoxysilane and to complete the hydrolysis and the condensation of the alkylalkoxysilane, adding at least one surface depositing agent to the acidified hydrolyzed alkylalkoxysilane solution in order to reduce evaporation of un-reacted alkylalkoxysilane and maintaining the solution in a substantially anhydrous condition, so that the amount of hydrolyzed silane absorbed by the porous substrate and the percentage of water excluded from the porous substrate by the repellent composition are increased.

A method of forming a seal in a confined configuration with a moisture curable, alkoxy-functional RTV composition is described and claimed herein. The method comprises the steps of: (i) applying to a first substrate, comprising a grooved substantially flat surface, said moisture curable alkoxy-functional RTV composition; (ii) positioning the grooved substantially flat surface of said first substrate in occluding proximity with a substantially flat surface of a second substrate, so the alkoxy-functional RTV composition effects a seal therebetween; (iii) exposing the alkoxy-functional RTV composition to a detrimental temperature; and (iv) curing the alkoxy-functional RTV composition.

This invention describes a method of producing a silicone elastomer from an emulsion. When the ingredients are mixed together, the resulting latex can be used immediately. Removing the water from the latex results in a silicone elastomer. The method combines (A) an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, present as an emulsion of dispersed particles in water, the emulsion having a pH of greater than 9, (B) dialkyltindicarboxylate, (C) alkylorthosilicate, (D) colloidal silica, and optionally (E) water, admixing (A) and (B) only in the presence of (C) to produce a dispersion of the ingredients in water. The ingredients can be distributed into a two-part system for storage. One embodiment includes fibers, lauryl alcohol, or a mixture of both in the emulsion; then forms an open-cell, elastomeric foam by forming a froth from the emulsion and removing the water from the froth.

A silicone elastomeric emulsion having improved shelf life is produced by a method which mixes the ingredients of the emulsion with the exception of a filler other than colloidal silica, then ages the mixture for at least two weeks at room temperature then adds the filler other than colloidaf silica. The improved emulsion yields a film upon drying that has better physical properties. The emulsion contains an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, colloidal silica, and an alkyl tin salt, as well as the filler other than colloidal silica. The emulsion has a pH of greater than 9 and a solids content of greater than 40 percent by weight. The emulsion is useful in forming a protective elastomeric coating over a substrate and as a caulking material.
