Rigid polyurethane foams are described. The foams are made using a prepolymer that is the reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate component, at least one hydroxy-functional acrylate component, and at least one polyol component. The prepolymer is then reacted at specified volume ratios and isocyanate indices with at least one polyol component that includes at least one polyol that is a biopolymer, including but not limited to castor oil, soybean oil, and the like. The foam is made in the presence of at least one blowing agent and at least one catalyst.

These isocyanate components are mixed with a polyol component to produce rigid foams. The foams are particularly suitable for foam-in-place applications, such as for reinforcing structural members of automobiles.

Expandable polymer compositions are used to reinforce or provide various types of insulation to cavities in structural elements. The polymer compositions include at least two different segments, which may or may not be joined. At least one of the segments will expand before another segment when heated. The fixst-to- expand segment forms a physical barrier to the expansion of later-expanding segments, thereby restricting the expansion of the later-expanding segment in at least one direction. In this manner, the location of the expanded polymer within the cavity can be easily and inexpensively controlled.

Polyurethane foams are made and attached to a substrate having an open cavity, but reacting a polyisocyanate component and a polyol component in the presence of a blowing agent. The polyisocyanate component includes at least one isocyanate-terminated, oxazolidone-containing intermediate. This process allows for very fast curing, good quality, adherent foams to be produced on, for example, vehicle parts and assemblies, for acoustical or vibration dampening and for structural reinforcement.
