Each row unit (12) includes a first gear case (22) comprising a housing containing a gear train coupled for effecting counter rotation of a parallel pair of forwardly projecting stalk roll drive shafts supported by the housing. Located beside the first gear case (22) is a stalk chopping gear case (64) comprising a second housing containing a second gear train coupled for effecting rotation of a stalk chopper drive shaft which is supported by, and projects downwardly from, the second gear box (64). Projecting transversely through a rear region of each of the first and second gear cases is a main power shaft (36), with a dual direction slip clutch (140) being mounted on the drive shaft (36) between the first and second gear cases (22, 64) for establishing overload protection for the gear cases. In the event a stalk chopper is not used, the slip clutch (140) may be used to establish overload protection for an adjacent second row unit (12) gear case.
