A manual controller (28) mounted on the steering wheel (10) allows input to the computer (24) and manipulation of the primary display (26) through the menu screens. The controller (28) includes a scroll wheel (34) which is oriented so that its rotational axis is parallel to the steering axis (A). The controller (28) includes a central push button (36) for activating a particular selection highlighted on the primary display (26). A plurality of category selector buttons (38 - 44) operate as mode switches for activating various vehicle system subjects through the information system (22). The scroll wheel (34) and push button selectors (36 - 44) establish an interface for the driver which can be operated intuitively, without taking eyes off the road or releasing the driver's grip of the steering wheel (10).
