The invention relates to a method for producing a base varnish/clear varnish-two-coat varnish and/or a transparent sealing layer on the outer covering layer of a varnished surface of a substrate by applying a transparent, covering agent which can be hardened by radical polymerization and can also be hardened by exposing said agent to energy rich radiation. A transparent covering agent is used whose hard resin body comprises: I. 70 to 100 weight % of olefinic groups which can undergo radical polymerization and contain oligo- and/or prepolymers and II. 0 to 30 weight % of olefinic groups which can be polymerized and contain reactive diluents having a respective calculated molar mass of less than 500. The components I comprise from 75 to 100 weight % of an aliphatic urethane(meth)acrylate with a (meth)acryloyl functionality of on average 3 to 4.5 per molecule and a calculated molecular mass of at least 826. Said components are formed by conversion of acyclic aliphatic diisocyanates with 8 C-atoms and/or polyisocyanates derived from such diisocyanates comprising low molecular weight aliphatic compounds which have one or more hydroxyl groups in addition to one or more (meth)acryloyl groups.
