The Group VIII metal catalyst is contacted with a gas stream which includes hydrogen for a period of from about 0.001 seconds to about 200 seconds as it is being returned to the carbonylation zone.

The systems allow operation of equipment used for such concentrations in two or more modes of operation. At least one mode is intended to produce a concentrated or purified acetic acid stream. The invention provides methods for recovering iodine-containing compounds from a gaseous stream that contain at least one iodine-containing compound. The method includes: (a) contacting the gaseous stream with liquid methyl acetate in a first scrubbing zone to produce a methyl acetate- scrubbed gaseous stream and a first used scrubbant, the first used scrubbant containing methyl acetate, acetic acid, and the iodide compound; and (b) contacting at least some of the methyl acetate-scrubbed gaseous stream with liquid acetic acid in a second scrubbing zone to produce an acetic acid- scrubbed gaseous stream and a second used scrubbant, the second used scrubbant containing methyl acetate and acetic acid. The method may further include a third scrubber step that includes contacting at least some of the acetic acid-scrubbed gaseous stream with water in a third scrubbing zone to produce a water-scrubbed gaseous stream and a third used scrubbant, the third used scrubbant containing water and acetic acid. The gaseous stream may also contain other components, for example hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methyl acetate, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, nitrogen, ethylidene diacetate, methane, argon or a combination of two or more of the foregoing. Optionally, at least some of the third used scrubbant with reactants may be combined in a chemical process that uses mixtures of acetic acid and water.

Processes for producing aromatic dicarboxylic acids are disclosed, the processes including a step of combining in a reaction medium a dialkyl aromatic, a solvent comprising water and a saturated organic acid having from 2-4 carbon atoms, and an oxygen-containing gas, at a temperature from about 125°C to about 1550C, in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising cobalt, manganese, zirconium, and bromine, wherein the weight ratio of cobalt to manganese in the reaction mixture is fro about 10 to about 400. The processes provide improved conversion, while reducing the formation of carbon oxides and other by-products.

A process for removing acetone from a methyl acetate, methyl iodide and acetone mixture includes the step of removing a side stream from the distillation zone rich in acetone. In a preferred embodiment the methyl acetate, methyl iodide and acetone mixture is contacted with water before or concurrently with fractional distillation. The process is particularly applicable to removing acetone by-product in a carbonylation process for the production of acetic anhydride.
