The coating surrounding the metal core has at least one surrounding metal oxide layer and at least one surrounding chemically nonreactive plastic layer, the content of the at least one metal oxide layer being at least 9 wt.% and the content of the at least one plastic layer being at least 0.4 wt.%, in each case based on the weight of the uncoated metal pigment, and the at least one metal oxide layer surrounding the metal core is not an oxidation product of the metal core. The invention further relates to a method for producing the metal pigments and to the use thereof.
