The electrode (22) includes a nonconductive sheet of material formed into a diametrically compressible spiral tending to unwind. An exterior surface of the sheet contacts the interior vaginal wall after the electrode (22) is inserted into a vagina (12). Conductive electrode elements circumferentially oriented on the exterior surface of the sheet are thereby forced into electrical contact with the vaginal wall. Leads (28) couple electrical stimulation signals to the electrode elements.

Electrical receptacles, formed in the molding process at the interior circumferential surface of the conductive polymer bands (22, 24, 26 and 28), accept metal contacts attached to electrical leads (36) to make a secure and durable, mechanical and electrical connection between the conductive polymer bands (22, 24, 26 and 28) and the leads (36). The leads (36) are coupled to a controller (40) and carry electrical current to and from the metal contacts which then distribute the current to the conductive polymer bands (22, 24, 26 and 28) to cause a contraction of the vaginal muscles responsible for controlling urinary incontinence in women.

A disposable condom (14) is unrolled over the vaginal plug (12) and includes conductive elements (24) which are positioned in electrical contact with the electrodes (22) to carry the electric pulses to the muscles.

An apparatus (10) and method for promoting healing of injured tissue, such as fractured bone, with interacting electric current and a magnetic flux field. Electrodes (16, 17) are adhesively attached to the skin adjacent the injured tissue. One or more coil assemblies (18,19) normally spaced from the electrodes (16,17) are located adjacent the tissue in alignment with the fractured bone. A probe generator (26) electrically connected to the electrodes (16, 17) operates to provide electric current pylses to the electrodes (16, 17). A field generator (31) electrically connected to the coil assemblies (18, 19) is operable to energize the coil assemblies (18, 19) to produce magnetic field pulses. The pulse generator (26) and field generator (31) are electrically coupled to maintain the electrode current pulses and magnetic field pulses in fixed phase relationship to produce a net current in the region of the fractured bone and generally perpendicular to the plane of the fracture.
