A harvesting machine such as a disc mower-conditioner (10) is provided comprising a disc cutterbar (26) with transversely spaced rotatable cutter units (28) operable to sever standing crop material by impact action. A flexible curtain (40) extends around the perimeter of the disc cutterbar (26). A transverse deflector panel (50) is supported by the mower-conditioner frame (14) between the disc cutterbar (26) and the flexible curtain (40) to restrict the movement of the forward transverse portion (42) of the flexible curtain (40) toward the cutterbar (26). The deflector panel (50) is pivotally mounted for fore-and-aft movement about a generally transverse axis and has sufficient mass to resist movement of the curtain (40) induced by an air flow created by rotation of the disc cutters (28). The deflector panel (50) includes a lower curved portion (54) to facilitate the passage of crop material therebeneath for presentation to the disc cutterbar (26).

The crop lifter (50) is also operable to facilitate a feeding of the severed crop material into the conditioning mechanism (30). The top (56) of the crop lifter (50) is being positioned in substantially the same plane as the raised central portion (41) of the disc cutter (28) for properly lifting the severed crop material toward the conditioning mechanism (30) and for protecting the hardware (47) detachably fastening the corresponding knife (45) to the disc cutter (28).

The leading inclined ramp portions (75) can be provided with replaceable wear members (90) to extend the operative life of the disc cutter members (70).

The header (20) of the disc mower-conditioner (10) is provided with a jackstand (55) to effect a tilting of the disc cutterbar (26) at a predetermined angle (A) relative to horizontal. The fill hole (48) for adding lubricant (L) to the cutterbar (26) is positioned such that the free volume of the cutterbar (26) vertically below the fill hole (48), when the cutterbar (26) is tilted at the predetermined angle (A), is substantially equal to the recommended volume of lubricant (L) to be carried by the entire disc cutterbar (26). The proper volume of lubricant (L) for the cutterbar (26) can easily be determined by filling the cutterbar (26) with lubricant (L) up to the fill hole (48) when the cutterbar (26) is tilted at the predetermined angle (A).
