The roll support spindles are mounted on a pivoted support frame and a pivoted plate depends from the support frame and is located in the space between adjacent roll ends. The cover (60) includes detents which cooperate with the pivoted plate to allow sliding of the cover (60) on the housing (10) to expose a different roll of toilet tissue only when one of the rolls is substantially depleted.

Dispensing is transferred from a stub roll (S) to a reserve roll (R) automatically in response to sensing a predetermined quantity of the stub roll (S). An isolating element (102a) is provided to lift the reserve roll (R) out of contact with dispensing rollers (44a-44) during dispensing of sheet material from the stub roll (S), and a nipping element (70) is provided to nip sheet material of the reserve roll (R) when dispensing is transferred from the stub roll (S) to the reserve roll (R). A camming mechanism (88) controls movement of both the lifting mechanism and the nipping element (70). Structure (108) is also provided for sensing the diameter of the reserve roll (R) of sheet material and providing an indication when the reserve roll (R) is a predetermined diameter. The dispenser is quite and capacity efficient.

Each of the zones of weakness (16) comprises a plurality of perforations (20) and frangible sheet material portions (18). Each of the frangible sheet material portions (18) has a width of from about 0.3mm to about 1.8 mm. The total width of the frangible sheet portions (18) in each zone of weakness is from about 10% to about 30% of the overall width of the sheet material (10). The sheet material (10) has an elasticity in the dispensing direction of from about 4% to about 20%. The sheet material (10) has a dry tensile strength in the dispensing direction of from about 4,000 grams per 3 inches of width to about 12,000 grams per 3 inches of width. The sheet material (10) has a wet tensile strength in the weakest direction, typically, a direction orthogonal to the dispensing direction, of at least about 900 grams per 3 inches of width. In addition, the sheet material (10) has a tensile ratio of less than about 2.0. A dispensing system includes a dispenser defining an interior for containing the sheet material (10) and an outlet for allowing sheet material (10) to be dispensed from the interior of the housing.
