Light emitted from a light emitting portion of the reflective photosensor (17) is reflected from the reflection plate (11a) at the time of the absence of the banknotes (28) so as not to directly return to the reflective photosensor (17). This prevents the reflective photosensor (17) from erroneously detecting the medium guide (11) at the time of the absence of media on the basis of light reflected from the medium guide (11). The medium guide (11) and the reflection plate (11a) are integrally formed. Accordingly, additional parts or additional assembly is not required and a low-cost medium detector can be realized.
