A portable card unit handler is adapted to receive a card unit provided with memory so as to handle the card unit. The handler comprises communication sections (23, 243) for the card unit, a connector section (14) connectable detachably with an external device, communication sections (24, 244) for an external device, a display section (13), and a control section (20). When an external device is connected to the connector section (14), the control section (20) controls the communication sections (23, 243) and the communication sections (24, 244) so that data can be transferred between a card unit and the external device. When no external device is connected to the connector section (14), on the other hand, the control section (20) controls communication sections (23, 243) so that data can be read from the memory in the card unit and displayed on the display section (13). This handler functions as an information display device for card units and as a read/write device for card units.
