An inorganic cellular composite material for fire and heat protection, suitable for utilization as a thermal insulator and/or as a core for fire doors and fire proof elements is disclosed. Inorganic composite material comprises a reinforcing fiber component in the form of basalt fiber filaments, and a binder matrix component, provided as a reaction product of calcium silicate- and calcium aluminate compounds with water. Thermal conductivity coefficient (lambda value) of said composite material is shown to decrease upon exposure thereof to elevated temperatures. This phenomenon may be related to fiber-reinforced highly porous structure of the composite material and ability of the binder component to release chemically bound water upon heating.
