Flame retardant compositions comprising admixtures of polyphenylene ether resin, a polyalkenyl aromatic and as the sole flame retardant agent, a halogenated aromatic compound or mixture of such compounds, are described. These provide decided advantages over corresponding flame retardant compositions containing synergistic agents and/or aromatic phosphate flame retardants, alone, or in combina- t i on with halogenated aromatics. They are useful for shaping into a wide variety of articles for industrial or household purposes.

The adhesion of metal deposited from a metal deposition bath on the surface of an article molded from a thermoplastic composition of a polyphenylene ether resin is considerably improved by including alumina in the substrate composition, as described. The resultant parts, in stressed and unstressed form, exhibit bond strengths of at least 0.7 Kg/cm, initially and after aging for several days, and are much more likely to withstand conditions normally causing separation of the metal deposit from the substrate.

The resultant blends are moldable into articles having better Gardner (falling dart) impact strength than corresponding compositions similarly modified with low density polethylene, without detriment to other important physical properties of the compositions.
