An apparatus for heating a length of tubing, for example for heating a glass capillary tube in gas chromatography, is disclosed. The power for heating the glass capillary tube is applied by passing current directly through a cylindrical heater tube (100) which encircles the glass capillary tube. The heater tube (100) is encircled by further tubes (110, 150, 155) for electrical and thermal insulation. The apparatus is small and removable yet highly efficient, capable of uniformly heating a glass capillary tube over a length of 13 centimeters to more than 400° C with less than 30 watts of power.

A thermal ink-jet printer (10) including a paper advancing mechanism (14) and a pen traversing mechanism (18) and a pen (20) is disclosed. The pen (20) includes a nozzle plate portion (22) which includes irregularly spaced columns of nozzles (24) for staggering application of inks onto the print medium (16) such that a drying time is provided between applications of differing inks to adjacent areas. The printer (10) further includes a platen heater assembly (68) as a means of fixing and drying the ink on the print medium (16), and a vacuum fan (62) and an associated plurality of platen vacuum holes (74) as a means of holding the print medium (16) in close contact with the heater plate assembly (68), thus increasing efficiency of heat transfer. The printer (10) is characterized in that it is capable of producing, at relatively high speeds on ordinary untreated paper or other print medium, a highly defined image relatively free from the problems of color bleeding, feathering, ink coalescence, and paper cockle normally associated with ink-jet printers. The primary usage of the printer (10) is in computer generated data printout applications.

A forensic sample and tracking system includes a computer system (11) which operates a data base (25) and a read/write station (15). The assignment of an identifier in the data base (15) and an identification code to be printed on a sample bottle label (51) are coordinated by the computer (11). An identification code can then be read for verification after it is written. This permits automated verifying of identification codes in a heretofore unavailable manner. The read/write station (15) makes use of an inexpensive, reliable and compact thermal ink jet print head (39) so that a field computer (26) and read/write station (21) can be taken to sample collection sites. The effective linear resolution of the identification code is enhanced using a two-track bar code.

A novel structure for a small, inexpensive, and easily replaced infrared source having near blackbody emission over a spectrum of 2-20 micron wavelengths is disclosed. The source element is self-starting and has a life expectancy in excess of 1000 hours at 1700 degrees K, which requires only 22 watts of power to maintain. Because the source is energy efficient, there is no need of auxilliary cooling or added thermal isolation from adjacent components when the source is used in an instrument such as a spectrophotometer.
