A zirconium based alloy plate of low irradiation growth, containing not more than 5 wt% Sn and/or not more than 5 wt% Nb, and the balance Zr of not less than 90 wt%. The alloy plate has such a texture that 〈0001〉 orientation (FR value) with respect to direction perpendicular to the surface of the plate ranges from 0.20 to 0.50. This alloy plate is effective in being used to form a fuel channel box (1). Also a fuel assembly using this channel box (1) is provided in which the crystal orientation of the zirconium alloy is made random by a heat treatment. Specifically, by the heat treatment, the Fr, Ft, and Fℓ values thereof are set to 0.25 to 0.50, 0.25 to 0.36, and 0.25 to 0.36, respectively.

A channel box for nuclear-reactor fuel assemblies (MOX fuel assembly) containing plutonium is provided, capable of properly controlling excess reactivity without mixing neutron absorber or burnable poison into a fuel rod. In the channel box for a nuclear-reactor fuel assemblies, there is no gap between tne channel box (1) and members (4) containing burnable poison because the members (4) containing burnable poison are in the channel box. The burnable poison does not directly contact the reactor water. Alternatively, the burnable poison members are on a water rod (3).

A method of operating a nuclear reactor having within a reactor core a plurality of nuclear fuel channel boxes (1) each formed of a tubular member made of a zirconium based alloy, comprising the steps of exchanging fuel (11) after a predetermined period of operation time, which fuel is disposed in the channel boxes (1), and subsequently operating the reactor in a predetermined period of time, said alloy containing hexagonal crystals having a strain occurring due to neutron irradiation of 0.5 x 10²² n/cm² growth being not more than 2.5 x 10⁻⁴, an operation of said reactor after the degree of burn-up on taking-out reached 32 GWd/t or after nuclear fuel (11) was exchanged being effected, while the channel boxes (1) are located at the same positions as those in a previous operation and while the nuclear fuel (11) is exchanged at least two times. Further disclosed is a method of manufacturing said nuclear fuel channel boxes (1).

A fuel assembly for a nuclear reactor comprising a fuel cladding tube (11) of three-layer structure having an outer surface (16) in contact with reactor water of the nuclear reactor, an inner surface layer (14) in contact with the nuclear fuel, and an intermediate layer (15) interposed between the outer surface layer and the inner surface layer. the outer surface layer (16) is made of a Zr-based alloy containing Nb, Sn and Mo. The inner surface layer(14) is made of pure zirconium. The intermediate layer is made of a high ductility alloy which is higher in ductility than the outer surface layer (16) and is higher in strength than the inner surface layer(14).
