    摘要: A liquid crystal display has a nematic liquid crystal (60), opposite sides of which are contacted by respective orientation films (50, 51). Electrodes (40, 41, 42) on opposite sides of the nematic liquid crystal (60) are used to control the transmission of light through the nematic liquid crystal (60) and polarizing plates (10, 11) by varying the optical rotation of polarized light through the nematic liquid crystal (60). In such an arrangement:

    i) the dielectric constant anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal (60) is at least 4 ;
    ii) the orientation films (50, 51) are arranged so that the nematic liquid crystal (60) has a twist angle greater than 90° but not greater than 150° ;
    iii) the electrode (42) on one side of the nematic liquid crystal forms a matrix of active elements and a drive circuit (90) applies an alternating voltage to the other electrode (40); and/or
    iv) the liquid crystal display includes a phase difference plate (20, 21) with the product of the thickness and refractive index anisotropy of the phase difference plate (20, 21) being at least 0.005µm but not greater than 0.2µm.

    In this way, the voltage needed to switch the liquid crystal display between the state in which it passes light and the state on which it blocks light may be reduced.

    摘要: A display device, which is adapted for time-division driving and is free from occurrence of crosstalk, includes a pair of substrates (1, 1') which are arranged to be opposite to each other and at least one of which is transparent, electrodes (X, Y) provided respectively on surfaces of the substrates (1, 1') facing each other, and a material which is sandwiched between the electrodes (X, Y) and the light transmitting quantity of which is changed by an electric field applied between the electrodes (X, Y). The electrodes (X, Y) formed on the surfaces of the substrates (1, 1') facing each other constitute scanning electrodes (X) and signal electrodes (Y) which intersect each other to form display portions. The signal electrodes (Y) constitute independent electrodes (5) formed independently of each other in units of display portions. Outside leads of the respective independent electrodes (5) are passed through the substrate (1) provided with the electrodes (5) and are led out to the back surface of the substrate (1).

    摘要: The invention relates to a humidity sensor of electric resistance type whose electric resistance changes in accordance with an ambient humidity, characterized by a protective film (6) of silicone resin provided on the surface of a humidity-sensitive material (3), and to a method for preparing the same. The protective film (6) of silicone resin is formed by applying a varnish of siloxanes to the humidity-sensitive material and subjecting the varnish to reaction. The varnish can be of one-pot type or two-pot type, and desirably the reaction of siloxanes is a cross-linking reaction. The formed protective film is not influenced by swelling or shrinking of the humidity-sensitive material, and is prevented from flowing off due to a temperature rise, or from deposition of dusts, etc.
