Methods and apparatus are provided which permit well testing operations to be performed downhole in a subterranean well. In various described methods, fluids flowed from a formation during a test may be disposed of downhole by injecting the fluids into the formation from which they were produced, or by injecting the fluids into another formation. In several of the embodiments of the invention, apparatus utilized in the methods permit convenient retrieval of samples of the formation fluids and provide enhanced data acquisition for monitoring of the test and for evaluation of the formation fluids.

A downhole telemetry system (10) for remote communication. The system (10) includes a downhole transmitter (44) that radiates an electromagnetic signal (46) carrying information into the earth. The electromagnetic signal (46) is received by a subsea repeater (48) that processes and retransmits the information through the sea. A remote station (54) receives the information from the subsea repeater (48) and stores the information. A master station (70) periodically polls the remote station (54) to request the information using meteor burst trails (76) to reflect radio waves (80) between the master station (70) and the remote station (54). Following the request, the remote station (54) generates radio waves (80) carrying the information that are reflected off meteor burst trails (78) and received by the master station (54).

A formation testing system provides the ability to reliably and repeatedly perform tests, such as drawdown tests, on closely spaced apart formations intersected by subterranean wellbores without relying on absolute fluid pressure for actuation thereof. The formation testing system is configured for normal drilling operations or for fluid sampling operations by applying preselected differential pressures to the system. The formation testing system includes opposing pistons (68,74) which cooperate to open and close a valve.
