The alignment of the pouring nozzle (8) of a continuous casting installation having a plurality of mould blocks (1) connected together to form two endless tracks which cooperate to define the mould cavity (2) is carried out by connecting a dummy nozzle (8′) of the same size and shape as the nozzle (8) to the tundish mounting stand (30) and aligning the dummy nozzle (8′) with the mould cavity (2). The carriage (6) is then moved to a position remote from the casting machine (3) and the distances of the dummy nozzle (8′) from sensors (14, 17) are measured. The nozzle (8) is then connected to the tundish mounting stand (30) and the distances of the nozzle (8) from the sensors (14, 17) are again measured. The mounting stand (30) is then moved by actuators (9, 10, 11) with respect to the carriage until the position of the nozzle (8) is precisely the same as the previous position of the dummy nozzle (8′) whereby the nozzle (8) is then aligned with the mould cavity.

Each endless track (2) passes around gears (12,13) at the upstream and downstream ends of the mould cavity (3). An endless chain (29) passes around sprockets mounted coaxially on the shafts of the gears (12,13) of each mould assembly (2) and drivingly couples them. Tensioner means (32) are arranged to produce a tensile force in the endless chain (29) and thus to urge the mould blocks (1) in the associated said run towards one another. Each endless track has a horizontal cooling run (10) and the mould blocks in this run may also be urged together by a similar endless chain (35) and tensioner means (38) acting on sprockets (33,34) mounted on the shafts of gears (11,12′) engaging the endless tracks at the upstream and downstream ends of the cooling zone (10).

A continuous casting installation of endless track type comprises a plurality of mould blocks (1) connected together in two endless tracks (2). The two tracks have runs which are disposed in opposed parallel relationship and each mould block (1) is of generally L-shaped cross section of which each limb (1a, 1b) cooperates and forms a seal with a limb of an associated mould block in the other track when the two said mould blocks are in the cooperating runs whereby the mould blocks in the said runs define a mould cavity (3). In use, the mould blocks in the said opposed runs are moved in the same direction and molten metal is poured into one end of the mould cavity (3) and a casting (5) is removed at the other end. A guide rail (10, 11) is situated within each track and the guide rails are offset in opposite directions from the centre line (1) of the mould cavity in the region upstream of the opposed runs. The guide rails (10, 11) cooperate with the mould blocks and guide them to move towards one another not only in the direction lying in the plane of the two continuous tracks but also in a direction perpendicular thereto whereby there is no risk of the corners of the limbs (1a, 1b) of the mould blocks (1) hitting one another.

Springs (16) connect the tundish car (10) and the tundish (9) and urge the downstream end of the outlet portion (8) into direct engagement with the upstream end of the tundish nozzle (11) or into indirect engagement with it via one or more intermediate members (19,20,21).

Control means (32) are responsive to the signals and arranged to supply a command signal to the cylinder (27) to cause it to adjust the angle of inclination of the tundish nozzle (21) to maintain the gaps between the tundish nozzle and the endless track substantially at predetermined values.
