The invention relates to a peer-to-peer (P2P) system, wherein in each transmitting peer (10) the incoming data stream is divided logically or chronologically into different parts, which are buffered in a volatile memory (13) and are transmitted to the receiving peers (20, 30) on different paths by means of a peer-to-peer transmission mechanism (40). In a receiving peer (20), the received parts of the subdivided data stream are buffered in a volatile memory (21) and are reassembled into a complete data stream. Furthermore, in the received peer (20), the parts of the subdivided data stream buffered by the volatile memory (21) are copied to a persistent memory (22), from which said parts are copied back to the volatile memory (21) at a later time if necessary. In order to reduce the extent of the data to be stored persistently, it is proposed that a portion of the received data be excluded from the persistent storage, wherein said exclusion occurs by selecting parts of the subdivided data stream. For this purpose, the selection can preferably be made in the transmitting peer (10), where the selected portion is separated from the remaining data of the subdivided data and is diverted to a secondary transmission mechanism (50). Alternatively, the selection can be made in the receiving peer (20), where the selected portion is separated from the received data buffered there and is deleted.

Quality of transmission of the first group of data packets is checked and, if it is above a first threshold, a second group of data packets is transmitted with a second bitrate higher than the first bitrate. The second group of data packets includes a payload, and additional control data (C1) allowing a receiver to check consistency of the delivered payload.
