    摘要: An electronic document distribution terminal includes a first adapter (12) coupled to data entry and document preparation means and a second adapter (15) coupled to data transmission means for communication, for example, with a similar terminal. Each of the adapters includes a processor for processing the data received from or for application to a coupled device. A peripheral processing memory (16) is employed to store data to be transferred between the adapters. This memory is under the control of a peripheral processing controller (10) whi allocates memory blocks to the adapters under the control of CPU 20. Thus each adapter operates as a stand-alone unit sharing a common memory with the CPU and peripheral processing controller performing only system control functions.

    摘要: @ This invention relates to a system for scanning an illuminated area (20) in which a linear image sensor (18) and the video channel (22, 12, 26 and 16) associated with the sensor are calibrated to maximize the video signal available. The sensor is limited in output by saturation of the CCD analog shift registers in the sensor. The channel is limited by the range of the analog-to-digital converter (16) in the channel. The useable video signal is maximized by calibrating the sensor (18) relative to its saturation condition and by adjusting the gain of the video channel relative to the range of the analog-to-digital converter (16). The sensor is calibrated by adjusting its exposure to illumination. The adjustment may be made by adjusting the illumination source (10) or by changing the sampling interval T for the sensor (18). The gain is adjusted by using a variable gain amplifier (12). A microprocessor (14) monitors the digitized video signal and controls the exposure and gain to calibrate the sensor and channel.

    摘要: As an example of a peripheral processing complex coupled to a central processor, there is disclosed a document distribution terminal which can be required to process large volumes of data. To do this rapidly and efficiently, the terminal (10 to 16) is organized to process all of the data in specialized peripheral devices (12 to 15). The supervising central processing unit (20) controls the terminal but does not perform any data processing. The functions of entering data, scanning documents, encrypting data, compressing data, transceiving data, decompressing data, decrypting data and printing data are all performed in parallel by specialized devices working directly with a shared memory (16). A peripheral processing controller (10) initialized by the central processing unit controls time-shared access to the memory by the specialized devices, incorporates the memory address registers of the devices 12 to 15 and processes the modification of the contents thereof to attain parallel and sequential processing of the data in shared storage by the initialized devices in a mode selected by the central processing unit.
