A filtration means (50) is provided in a data recording disk file for filtering air flowing from the region (44) of the spindle bearings (24,26) into the head/disk area (16) of the disk file. The filtration means is mounted to the disk file frame (10) adjacent the rotary shaft of the spindle (20) and together with the shaft defines a narrow annular gap for the flow of a very small portion of the total air flow from the region surrounding the spindle bearings. The filtration means includes first (52) and second (56) ring members which have axially-directed openings (54,58) and which together support filter material (60) located between the ring members. Almost all of the air flowing from the spindle bearings passes through the axially-directed openings of the ring members and the filter material and is thus filtered before entering the head/disk area. The filtration means also serves as a make-up filter for those generally sealed disk files in which the rotating disks serve as a pumping means for recirculating air within the head/disk area and in which the region surrounding the drive motor is open to the atmosphere.

A converging duct (82) is attached to the disk file housing (12) and has its inlet (86) located in close proximity to the periphery of the rotating disks. The outlet (89) of the converging duct is located adjacent to the coil (56) of the voice coil motor (VCM) actuator and oriented such that the flow exiting the outlet is perpendicular to the linear path (58) of the VCM. The outlet of the duct has an area smaller than that of the inlet so that there is an increase in velocity of the exiting air, which increases the cooling rate of the VCM. The shield directs a second portion of the air flow from the periphery of the disks across the electronic read/ write modules (80) located on the arms (54) which support the read/ write heads (50).
