A magnetic tape cartridge (11) comprises a device (16) settable to prevent inadvertent recording and thus erasure on the tape. The device (16) comprises a shaft (21) carrying a control disc (18) intermediate its length. The disc 18 either masks a sensor (23) from a light source (22) or allows illumination of the sensor according to its angular setting. The unit (16) is rotatably mounted in a sleeve (12) formed integrally with a part (11) of the cartridge. The unit 16 has a screwdriver slot (17c) and an indicator (17b). The sensor (23) is connected in a read/ write control circuit.

Tape drive system including means for threading cartridge magnetic tape over a predetermined data processing path 3 to a takeup reel 14. A cam track 17 is provided in a cover over the path. The track has a beginning point for positioning a longitudinal cam member 20 into engagement with a leader block 2b exposed through an opening in the cartridge. The track terminates over the takeup reel rotational axis. A bifurcated linkage member 19 is connected at one end to said longitudinal cam member, and to a drive motor 24. Rotation of the linkage member positions the longitudinal cam member between ends of the track engaging the leader block and threading it through the path and into a slot 14c on the takeup reel.

A magnetic head arm assembly comprises a lightweight, low inertia frustoconical arm (10) to which a magnetic head (12) is mounted at one end. The other end of the head arm is coupled to an end of a rotatable shaft (14), by which the arm can be pivoted. An electrical coil (16) which is disposed within a magnetic field supplied by permanent magnets (20,22) is fastened to the other end of the shaft (14). The pivotable magnetic head arm assembly may be vertically adjusted to control flying height and angularly adjusted relative to the surface of a magnetic diskto correct for azimuth variations.
