The slider is mounted so the slider can pivot in a radially oriented roll plane (18) about an effective roll axis (44). The effective roll axis is typically located centrally beneath the slider, preferably about half-way through the disk. By moving the effective roll axis from a position above the data surface, as found with conventional gimbal-type slider supports, to a point below the data surface, pivotal radial movements of the slider relative to the data surface due to flutter of the data surface are reduced or eliminated. This helps to prevent track misalignment between the data head and data track caused by flutter or other excursions of the disk while spinning.

When the tape is repositioned between data read/write operations, this servo information is used to identify this boundary to initiate the subsequently received data read/write operation. A predetermined amount of inter-block gap is provided at the end of the data block to ensure that subsequently received data is not written on top of the present data block or the overwriting of the next data record begins at the beginning of the data block. The system for gap positioning optimization in a tape drive activates the upstream read head during the tape acceleration process to sense the location of this boundary. The upstream read head senses the presence of a region devoid of data, indicating the inter-block gap, thereby confirming the location of the boundary with more precision than the servo data indication, and positively verifying before the write operation that the selected block is the one desired.

The relative height between two sets of magnetic head groups AT,BT shared for recording and reproduction and mounted on actuators 100A, 100B is adjusted at high accuracy, so that a track of a predetermined track width and track pitch can be formed. In a rotary head type magnetic recording/reproduction apparatus including two sets of magnetic head groups AT and BT of one or a plurality of magnetic heads displaceable in the track width direction by actuators 100A and 100B, a signal which becomes the reference for relative height adjustment of the heads is recorded by one of the magnetic head groups. Then, the magnetic tape is rewound, and the run of the magnetic tape is controlled by one of the magnetic head groups. Under this state, the relative height between the two sets of magnetic head groups is detected by the other magnetic head group, whereby the relative height of the two sets of magnetic head groups is adjusted according to that information.
