摘要:
An embossing apparatus and method which provides a better embossed appearance and eliminates undesired roughness on the backside of the web material. Two plies (3,3) are multilevel embossed between rigid engraved rolls (10,12) and backup rolls (6,8), which may be either engraved or smooth. One rigid roll has embossing elements (14) of varying heights and perforation elements, which run in a side-by-side relationship with the corresponding perforation elements on the opposing rigid roll in a nip region of the apparatus. The multiple plies are perforation bonded between the perforation elements, which are preferably the two highest elements, thus reinforcing the other multilevel embossed pattern formed in between the perforation bonds. The embossed patterns impart a quilt-like contoured appearance to the finished product.

A method of forming a multi-ply web by embossing a first ply (1) between a first pair (2) of matched embossing rolls including a first embossing roll (3) having protuberances formed in a substantially rigid outer surface and a second embossing roll (4) having protuberances formed of a resilient material thereby forming raised portions and recessed portions in the first ply, embossing a second ply (10) between a second pair of matched embossing rolls including a third roll (12) having protuberances formed in an outer surface formed of a resilient material and a fourth roll (14) having protuberances formed in a substantially rigid outer surface thereby forming raised portions and recessed portions in the second ply with the first and second pairs of matched embossing rolls being positioned such that the first embossing roll is positioned adjacent the third embossing roll forming a nip region between the respective protuberances formed in each roll. An adhesive is then applied to the web carried by the third adhesive roll with the first ply and second ply being adhered to one another in the nip region (24) wherein the raised portions of the first and second plies are adhered to one another and the recessed portions of the first and second plies are spaced from one another.
摘要:
A method and apparatus for pinch perforating multi-ply web material (2) to increase the perforation ply bond and/or perforation ply bond retention by pinching the multiple plies of web material together and then perforating the material using an anvil (25) and perforator blade (7) design provided on a perforating apparatus. Specifically, the apparatus comprises a roll mounted contoured perforator blade (7) which cooperates with a beveled anvil (25) to produce perforation ply bonds perpendicular to the length of the multiple plies of web material (2). The desired anvil/perforator blade interface angle between 0° and 20° is provided by beveling the anvil. A 15° beveled anvil is preferred to provide a 5° anvil/perforator blade interface angle. By pinching and bonding the leading edges and other predetermined points of the multi-ply tissue paper together before cutting, the likelihood of ply separation, missing plies and ply mismatch is greatly reduced.
