A flame-retardant styrene resin composition comprising 100 parts by weight of a styrene resin, 1 to 25 parts by weight of at least one flame retarder (A) represented by the formula (I): wherein X is Br or Cl; and each of h and i is an integer of 2 to 5, and 1 to 25 parts by weight of at least one flame retarder (B) represented by the formula (II): wherein X is Br or Cl; each of ℓ and m is an integer of 1 to 4; n means that the number of repeating units is 1 to 50; each of R' and R 2 is a C 1-12 alkyl group; and each of R 3 and R 4 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, an alkylphenyl group or a phenyl group, the total amount of (A) and (B) being 2 to 40 parts by weight. This composition has excellent heat resistance and excellent heat stability in addition to flame retardancy.

A flame retardant resin composition including the following components (A), (B) and (C) in the ratio (A):(B):(C)=15-99:0-84:1-30% by weight; and wherein the molar ratio of bromine atom and antimony atom is 1.2-4.5:1. Component (A) is a rubber reinforced resin composition including 10-100% by weight of graft copolymer (A-1) which is obtained by the polymerization of (b) 90-30% by weight of monomer components including 5-50% by weight of bromostyrene and 95-50% by weight of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of aromatic vinyl monomers, cyanated vinyl monomers, (meth)acrylic acid ester monomers, maleic anhydride, and maleimide monomers in the presence of (a) 10-70% by weight of a rubber-like polymer [ (a) + (b) = 100% by weight ] and 90-0% by weight of copolymer (A-2) obtained by the polymerization of 60-90% by weight of aromatic vinyl monomers and 40-10% by weight of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of cyanated vinyl monomers, (meth)acrylic acid ester monomers, maleic anhydride, and maleimide monomers. Component B is a bromine-containing copolymer obtained by the polymerization of 5-50% by weight of bromostyrene and 95-50% by weight of one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of aromatic vinyl monomers, cyanated vinyl monomers, (meth)acrylic acid ester monomers, maleic anhydride, and maleimide monomers. A flame-retardant rubber-modified styrene resin composition comprising, as essential components, (A) a rubber-modified styrene resin, (B) a halogenated bisphenol type polycarbonate oligomer, (C) a halogenated bisphenol type compound, and (D) a halogenated polyolefin compound. The resin composition contains these components (A), (B), (C), and (D) at specific proportions, and its contents of the components (B) and (C) must be at a specified ratio. The resin composition is not only flame-retardant but also possesses such excellent characteristics as a high degree of light resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance and fluidity when it is molded. It can be molded into articles of various shapes and has a wide variety of applications in business machines, electric appliances, and automobile parts.

An impact-resistant resin composition comprising a graft polymer (in which an aromatic alkenyl compound and an alkenyl cyanide compound are grafted onto a rubbery polymer) and a matrix (comprising a copolymer of an aromatic alkenyl compound and an alkenyl cyanide compound) can have improved vacuum-formability and the moulded articles prepared by vacuum-forming the composition can have smaller variations in thickness from point to point and a smaller reduction in strength due to contact with foamed polyurethane by ensuring that the following conditions are met:
(a) the proportion of rubber polymer in the composition is from 10 to 30% by weight: (b) the graft polymer has a degree of grafting of from 70 to 120% by weight; (c) the matrix has an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.55 to 0.80 dl/g, measured at 30°C in methyl ethyl ketone; and (d) the weight ratio of the aromatic alkenyl compound to the alkenyl cyanide compound in the composition is from 2.0 : 1 to 2.8 : 1.
Incorporation in the composition of from 0.01 to 2% by weight of a diorganopolysiloxane having a viscosity of from 5 to 100,000 centistokes at 25°C and/or from 0.1 to 3% by weight of a metal salt of a fatty acid improves the ability of the composition to maintain its strength upon contact with foamed polyurethane. The resulting composition is of value in forming the box body of a refrigerator.
