A method for measuring an apparent density of a metal powder includes holding a metal powder in a vessel, applying an alternating magnetic flux to the metal powder using an exciting coil disposed outside the vessel, detecting the alternating magnetic flux passed through the metal powder using a search coil disposed outside the vessel, and determining an apparent density of the metal powder from an amplitude of the detected alternating magnetic flux using a calibration curve representing a correlation between the apparent density of the metal powder and the amplitude of an alternating magnetic flux prepared in advance. The method enables to measure the apparent density of a metal powder with a high precision in an on-line and non-contact manner without stopping a process of producing a mixed powder or a process of producing a powder compact.

A detection method for detecting a concavo-convex shape surface defect existing on a ferromagnetic metal comprises a step of sensing a signal attributed to strain of the concavo-convex shape surface defect having a size in a range of 0.5 to 6 µm. The signal is magnetic flux leaking from the ferromagnetic metal to which magnetic flux is applied. A detecting apparatus incorporates a magnetizer for magnetizing a ferromagnetic metal and a plurality of magnetic sensors arranged in the direction perpendicular to a traveling direction of the ferromagnetic metal to sense a signal attributed to strain of a concavo-convex shape surface defect having a size in a range of 0.5 to 6 µm. A magnetic material is magnetized with a direct current to a rotational magnetization region and an alternate current excitation is performed in a direction having a component orthogonal to a direction of the direct current magnetization, and a component of an alternate current magnetic field which is generated by an interaction with the magnetic material in a direction orthogonal to the direction of the direct current magnetization is measured. Due to such a measuring method, a local magnetic property of the magnetic material can be measured with high precision almost without being influenced by disturbances or the like.

An apparatus for detecting periodic defect, has: a sensor 4; a small area selection means (72, 74) for separating a plurality of small areas whose area length is shorter than that of the area so that all distance intervals adjacent to one another are equal in a periodic defect arrangement direction to determine positions of the plurality of small areas, and selecting signals corresponding to the positions of the plurality of small areas from outputs from the sensor; an evaluation index calculation means 76 for calculating a similarity evaluation index between signal patterns among a plurality of signals selected by the small area selection means; a set value changing means (73, 75) for changing the positions of the small areas and the distance interval, and repeating computational processings of the small area selection means and the evaluation index calculation means; and a period judgment means 77 for judging the distance interval as a period when the evaluation index is higher than a value set beforehand. A method for detecting periodic defect has a signal inputting step, a small area selecting step, an evaluation index calculation step, a set value changing step, and a periodicity judging step.
