摘要: An intraocular lens includes an optic body (12) and a pair of cantilevered spiral support members or haptics (20) extending outwardly from a peripheral portion (16) of the optic body. The haptics (20) are formed as portions of an elongate cylindrical body. A method of making the haptics is disclosed which allows the haptic to be of variable cross-sectional area, to be aplanar, and to include bends and curves, for example, without introducing undesirable molecular level changes or damage into the material of the haptic, which molecular level changes result in conventional haptics undesirably having a memory of their former shape and resulting dimensional changes (creep) of the conventional haptics over time.

摘要: An intraocular lens (10) includes an optic body (12), and a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed elongate support haptics (14) extending radially outwardly and circumferentially on the optic body (12) to define a distal end foot portion (22) supportingly engageable with eye tissue and terminating in a distal (24) end for the haptic. In a first position for the haptics, the distal end foot portions (22) are spaced from the optic body (12). One of the optic body (12) and support haptic (14) defines releasable constraining features for engaging one of the optic body (12) or the other of the pair of haptics (14) to constrain the haptic (14) in a second position in which the distal end foot portion (22) thereof is adjacent to the optic body (12). In the second configuration of the intraocular lens (10) it is possible to pass the lens (10) into an eye via a surgical incision only slightly larger than the size of the optic body.

摘要: The present invention provides an improved intraocular lens haptic (14) having an enlarged anchoring head (16) and an integrally formed support portion (20) extending therefrom. An oblong hole (18) is provided in the anchoring head. The haptic is punched from a sheet or ribbon of polyvinylidene fluoride film, and thereafter a lens optic (12) is cast around the anchoring head. During the casting operation, the lens optic material fills in the oblong hole (18) and all spaces around the anchoring head (16). Thus, the anchoring head (16) is firmly embedded in an outer periphery of the lens optic (12). Because the haptic is punched, it can be fabricated to have a variety of different anchoring head shapes and to have a variety of support portion shapes with varying numbers of bends at different bend angles. The orientation of the oblong hole (18) within the anchoring head (16) is also easily changed as is the orientation of the anchoring head (16) relative to the support portion (20), although both structures are integral and formed from a single sheet of material.
