摘要:
When a superabsorbent material is to be incorporated into an absorbent composite in a relatively high concentration, it is necessary to carefully choose the superabsorbent material. Properties of the superabsorbent to be considered are total Absorbent Capacity, resistance to Deformation Under Load, the ability of the superabsorbent material to absorb while under a restraining force, and the ability of the superabsorbent material to wick fluids away from the insult area. By quantifying these characteristics of a superabsorbent material, one is able to predict which superabsorbent materials are suited for use in absorbent composites comprising a relatively high concentration of superabsorbent material.

摘要:
A method for producing a water-swellable, generally water-insoluble modified polysaccharide having good absorption properties. The method involves forming a mixture of a modified polysaccharide, water, and a crosslinking agent, recovering the modified polysaccharide from the mixture and heat-treating said recovered modified polysaccharide. Also described is a modified polysaccharide having crosslinks formed by esterification and amidation.

A distinctive absorbent article (10) is provided comprising a backsheet layer (30), and a topsheet layer (28) which is disposed in facing relation with the backsheet layer (30). An absorbent body (32) is interposed between the backsheet layer (30) and topsheet layer (28). The absorbent body (32) includes a retention portion (48) which comprises a matrix of substantially hydrophilic fibers having a distribution of high-absorbency particulate material therein. The hydrophilic fibers and high-absorbency particles can be provided in a fiber-to-particle weight ratio within the range of about 70:30 to about 30:70. A surge management layer (46), comprising bicomponent fibers having a denier of not more than about .33 tex (about 3d), is located adjacent at least one major, facing surface of the topsheet layer (28), and can cooperate with the article components to provide for a liquid Penetration Rate index of not less than about 2.67 ml/sec.
