A wave-receiving piezoelectric device (10) is constituted by providing a tubular piezoelectric element (1) including a piezoelectric body (2) which has an outer surface (2a) and an inner surface (2b) constituting principal two surfaces, two opposite sides (2c,2d) almost perpendicular to the two surfaces, a sectional shape corresponding to the thickness of a closed loop or a vortex, and an overall shape of roughly a tube, the piezoelectric body being polarized thicknesswise; and electrodes (3a,3b) respectively disposed on the two surfaces; and by sandwiching the piezoelectric body at the two opposite sides with a pair of rigid members (4,5); so that an acoustic pressure received by outer surfaces of the rigid members (4,5) is concentratively applied as a stress for changing a distance between the two opposite sides (2c,2d) of the piezoelectric body (1). As a result, the piezoelectric device (10) is provided with a remarkably increased hydrostatic piezoelectric constant (d h ) through selective enhancement of the contribution of axial deformation stress (d 31 or d 32 stress) than the piezoelectric body is used in an ordinary manner.

A sheet-form piezoelectric device having improved mechanical strengths as represented by an electrode peel strength while retaining flexibility and piezoelectric performances of a polymer-type piezoelectric device, is obtained by embedding a perforated sheet electrode into at least one surface layer of a polymer piezoelectric film treated with a solvent in advance. The sheet-form piezoelectric device may be wound or curved about a certain central axis to provide a tubular or curved piezoelectric device having wave-transmitting and/or -receiving characteristics suitable for wave-transmitting and/or -receiving devices, such as a hydrophone and microphone.
