摘要: A method and system modifies one or more control signals that are associated with the transmission or reception of copy-protected material. By modifying the control signals, most communication devices that rely on the protocol will prevent the transmission of the message, or will prevent or inhibit the subsequent processing or relaying of a received message. For example, if a cyclic-redundancy-code (CRC) is modified, a conventional network device that uses the received-but-modified CRC will likely reject the received material, thereby preventing it from being processed or transmitted further through the network. Select devices are configured to recognize and undo the modification, thereby allowing the material to be further processed. If the material is to be relayed, the modification is reapplied. Preferably, only local-area network devices are configured to undo the modification, while devices that provide wide-area network access are not configured to undo the modification. In this manner, protected content material with modified control signals is likely to be prevented from wide-area network distribution.

摘要: A method and apparatus for providing clock synchronization of 1394 buses having wireless devices utilizing 802.11 communication with computers attached to one or more 1394 buses, includes the steps of (a) synchronizing an internal time base of a wireless master device attached to a first bus by receiving a Software Beacon Alert that indicates a time of a subsequent transmission, applying the Software Beacon Alert to a first phase-lock loop circuit associated with the master device to create a filtered Software Beacon Alert. The first phase-lock loop circuit is unsymmetrical about zero error. A timing message is transmitted from the master device to a second phase-lock loop circuit associated with at least one slave device. The timing message must be sent to the at least one slave device before the master device receives a subsequent Software Beacon Alert message, so that the wireless master device and the at least one slave device are synchronized, even though they are on different buses. This invention allows 1394 devices having wireless means to communicate over an 802.11 WLAN network, so that communications can be synchronized between the master and slave device across 1394 serial buses.

摘要: A method and system for generating multiple self-ID packets that are used for mapping a node topology is disclosed. The node topology is based on a computer system comprised of a high performance serial bus (11) and a plurality of nodes NOD1, NOD2, ....., NODn coupled to the serial bus. Each node further includes an identification packet that is utilized for self-identifying itself on a network. In particular, a plurality of self-ID packets associated with the hardware actually present on the bus (11) as well as a plurality of virtual nodes VNOD1,.....VNODn that are not actually present are generated during a self-ID process. Then, these self-ID packets are forwarded over the serial bus to identify themselves to other remaining nodes in the network. Thereafter, a topology mapping table from all of the self-ID packets is generated.

摘要: In lieu of a strictly dedicated bus transaction such as a ping and self-identification, the timing delays for an IEEE 1394 serial bus are determined by an asynchronous transaction request and responsive acknowledgement response. Timing may therefore be determined either from asynchronous transactions occurring for other purposes (e.g., a read or write) or initiated for the purpose of determining timing.
