摘要: An apparatus and method for providing indicia on articles or packages, which indicia is an indication of such variables as identification, destination, weight, cost, postage or a combination of such variables. An article or container is disposed on a weighing device, and the weight of the article which is indicated when the scale balances, is automatically applied as a bar code, numerical indication or other form of indicia to a select portion of the surface of the article. The indicia may be printed by means of selectively operated printing wheels, an ink jet, a laser or electron beam marking device or other means which operate through an opening in the platform of the scale or from a location at the side of the scale. Xerographic or electrostatic printing means may also be employed, which is located within an opening in the scale platform or at the side of the scale and which is projected or propels particles to print indicia against a select portion of the article or container in accordance with information which was derived from a computer, manual keyboard input, speech synthesized electronic circuitry or other means.

摘要: For effecting high density magnetic recordings on a magnetic record member (50) coated with magnetic recording material, a plurality of different recordings may be provided as overlapping domains along a single select magnetic record track, thus multiplying the total amount of information which may be recorded along each record track of multiple track record member (50). A magnetic transducer (17) mounted on a support (35) is pivotally driven to variably align its pole pieces and recording or reproduction gaps with a select record track of a record member (50) to provide respective recordings, the domains of each of which are differently aligned from the domains of the others, permitting such different recording to overlap along the same length of the same track and to be discretely detected by suitably aligned pickups.

摘要: A theft detection system and method for detecting the unauthorised movement of an article 11 or assembly from a given location, such as in the act of theft or burglarizing a home, office, store or warehouse. Detection of such unauthorised movement or theft may be made at a remote location, such as a monitor station particularly when such movement is detected beyond predetermined bounds or limits. The system involves the short wave transmission of code signals which are indicative of the identity of the article or assembly and/or the location of its unauthorised movement. The code signals may be generated by electronic circuits 10 supported by or in the article to be protected. Detection of the signals is carried out at the monitor station so that movement of the article can be observed.

摘要: A scanning and monitoring system employing automatic image analysis of an image field, object or group of objects over a period of time together with the detection and analysis of one or more other variables, such as generated by sensors sensing changes in or degrees of magnetism, magnetic, spin, self radiation, induced radiation, color, temperature, internal structure such as grain or crystalline structure, flow and/or other variables relating to selected objects in an image field under analysis and/or selected portions of such image field. Image information derived from the analysis of reflected light, X-ray, sonic, magnetic spin or nuclear magnetic resonnance or other variable or a combination of such variables, is sensed, converted to signals such as analog video signals which are digitized and automatically computer analyzed with time wherein 'the time variable is recorded by means of codes and used in the automatic analysis. 摘要: An apparatus and method are provided for fabricating cutting tools and tool cutting edges and for improving the structures of cutting tools, particularly the cutting edge portions thereof. In one form, the method involves subjecting the edge EI or edges of a cutting tool 10 such as a blade or other form of cutting tool, to the intense heat of a radiation beam such as an intense light beam generated by a laser or an electron beam generated by an electron gun. The intense heat serves one or more of a number of functions including the vaporizing, eroding or melting of a portion of the material of the surface stratum of a blade or cutting tool adjacent the cutting edge portion thereof and in certain instances including that material which defines the cutting edge. The liquified thin layer of material which is formed and remains adjacent the cutting edge of the tool, tools rapidly as the beam passes, forming a non-crystalline layer of the metal or alloy from which it is melted, which layer is harder and more corrosion resistant than the original alloy thereby providing an improvement in the cutting edge and material adjacent thereto which is subject to attrition during the cutting operation. The substrate of which the hard surface stratum is formed may comprise the base of the cutting tool or a coating thereon wherein such base or coating may be made of alloys of such metals as nickel, cobalt, chromium, tungsten, titanium, silicon, zirconium, and other hard metals. If the cutting tool is a preshaped object, computer controlled means is employed to predeterminately position the tool and beam generating means and to operate the beam to effect a predetermined blade hardening operation. If the cutting tool is in the form of a blade it may be continuously fed past the radiation beam generator which op-(Continuation next page) erates continuously on or adjacent to the preshaped edge thereof to form a hard coating or surface stratum adjacent to and over the edge. A finishing operation such as gringing, honing and/or lapping operation may be employed against the cutting edge after the operation of the beam thereon to finish the edge as may such operations be performed prior to the operation of the beam as well as after the beam operation. In a particular form, the beam or a plurality of beams may be predeterminately operated to partially or completely form the cutting edge while the tool is in operation or while it is inoperative but held by a tool holder or tool changer so as to sharpen or enhance the operation of the tool after it has experienced cutting operations. In yet another form, one or more intense radiation beams may be focused and utilized to vaporize or melt metals or alloys forming or coated on cutting tools for the purpose of forming or sharpening cutting edges thereof. Two electron or laser beams may operate per set or in combination for example, to vaporize the edge of a blade or cutting tool in a manner to sharpen same after it has become dull or during its formation.

摘要: A timepiece is set by transmission of a time related signal which is received by the timepiece and converted into digital form. The circuit developing signals representing the time displayed by the timepiece is stepped more rapidly than normal and simultaneously compared with the time related signal until they compare at which time the rapid stepping of the timepiece is abruptly terminated and normal stepping of the timepiece is resumed. The carrier may be any supersonic frequency. Setting of the timepiece may be enabled only after operating a time check switch.
The above technique may be employed to produce an alarm at a requested time to serve as a memory or wake-up aid, for example.
